Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis are serious diseases.
Diphtheria is an acute bacterial disease that can infect the body:
throat (respiratory diphtheria)
skin (diphtheria skin or cutaneous)
The diphtheria bacterium can enter the body through the nose and mouth. However, it can also enter through a cut in the skin. It is transmitted from person to person through respiratory secretions or airborne particles. Symptoms usually develop two to four days after exposure to bacteria.
